BURLINGTON, Vt. -- National Democrats support campaign finance reform, including a Vermont campaign finance law that is to be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court later this month.

That was the word from party chairman and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who announced on Monday that the party has filed a friend-of-the-court brief defending Vermont's law.

Dean signed the campaign finance bill into law in 1997.

The law limits the amount candidates can spend to get elected.

"The issue is do individual states have the right to set any kind of limit in order to make sure politics and politicians are now above reproach when it comes to influence peddling. That is a really critical issue in any democracy," said Dean.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case at the end of the month.
