Colchester Teacher-Strike Continues

The school board in Colchester said it wants to hold more talks over the weekend with teachers to try to end their two-week strike and get students back in class by Monday.

But so far Friday night, the teachers' union said no one from the board has called.

As the strike lingers, not only teachers, but also others who worked for the school district, are going without their paychecks.

"It's very hard for me going to bed at night not knowing if I have to get up and work tomorrow -- not knowing," said bus driver Jen Couture.

The bus has been sitting in her driveway for two weeks.

Now that she's on unemployment earning $200 a week less than before, Couture is still trying to make ends meet as a single mother of three. She said she is angry about the strike.

"I've been unemployed all summer," said Couture. "We just barely started back up at school and I'm unemployed again. I don't have any other means of income. This is my job. When everybody who's paying taxes is making less raises than what they're asking, it's not fair. It's not fair to us."

At union headquarters, some teachers are taking out no-interest loans from the National Education Association while they wait for word from the school board.

The last round of talks Tuesday night broke down over one issue, salary.

The two sides agreed on 21 out of 22 issues.
