BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Trash-burning plants and paper mills have cleaned up their act, dramatically cutting the amount of toxic dioxin being released into the air and rivers. Now, the biggest polluter may be your average Champlain Valley resident -- at least, those who burn household trash and garbage. Burning such waste releases dioxin, which an environmental group in St. Lawrence County warns is becoming a huge health threat. Burning barrels are banned in Vermont but legal in rural New York towns with fewer than 20,000 people. Some volunteers are trying to convince lawmakers and farm groups to support a statewide ban.Click here for more.
