MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont Department of Health is starting a new campaign aimed at getting pregnant women to break the tobacco habit.
According to its statistics, 20 percent of women in Vermont smoke during pregnancy.
"Lots of women do spontaneously quit on their own -- as soon as they
find out they're pregnant. And that's great. But even if it's further into the pregnancy, it's still helpful to the baby to quit," said Karen Garbarino of the Vermont Department of Health.
Health officials say smoking during pregnancy can lead to low birth weight and other health problems.
Anyone who wants help in stopping smoking can call a toll-free "quit line" at (877) 937-7848.
